Do You Know Anyone Who May Have Experienced a Battle with Mental Health or Substance Abuse?

Mental health and substance abuse are challenges that affect more people than we often realize. As a former criminal justice employee, I saw firsthand the struggles many people face. However, it wasn’t until I became an advocate for the mentally ill community as a Mental Health Case Manager that I truly recognized how widespread mental health issues are. Many people are fighting battles we can’t see, and for some, alcohol or drugs become a way to self-medicate—a temporary escape from the pain they endure.

The Reality of Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Mental health struggles often go unnoticed or unaddressed. In fact, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year (National Alliance on Mental Illness), and yet many never seek treatment. The stigma around mental health often leaves people feeling isolated and unable to ask for help. As a result, many turn to substance use to cope.

In 2019, 20.4 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder, and 9.5 million of those individuals also had a co-occurring mental illness (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). This means a significant portion of people struggling with addiction are also dealing with underlying mental health issues, using substances as a form of escape.

Recognizing the Signs

It’s important to recognize when someone is struggling. Look for signs such as:

  • Sudden behavioral changes: A shift in mood, withdrawal from social interactions, or drastic changes in daily habits.
  • Neglecting responsibilities: Failing to meet obligations at work, school, or in personal life.
  • Increased substance use: Relying more heavily on alcohol or drugs to cope with stress or emotions.
  • Expressions of hopelessness: Talking about feeling trapped or unable to cope with life’s challenges.

Early intervention can make all the difference. If you notice these signs in someone you know, it’s important to encourage them to seek professional help.

Finding Help

While it can be hard to start the conversation, finding the right help is essential. There are numerous resources available—whether it’s therapy, rehab programs, or supportive housing options—that can offer people the support they need to start their recovery journey.
